Issues
Ethical Ramifications
This movie has no idea what its own ethical code is. In today's society, it would require more work for them to make this movie morally cohesive than for them to start from scratch. The lack of coherence is so problematic that no amount of elaboration can save this movie from being irrelevant. There are better, more ethical ways to teach our children that the planet needs to be saved.
The Writing
This movie is poorly written. There is no other way to say that. There is one part of the movie that is the actual plot of the movie, and then there is the rest of the movie. The portrayal of the animals as thinly-veiled stereotypes of different human groups makes the presentation of the movie's ideas more problematic.
A Danger to Children
This movie teaches kids that it is okay for them to wander through the Australian Bush country with nobody there to watch over them and that there are no consequences for their actions. We, as parents, know that we must ensure that children are safe, and part of that involves making them think that they can't do whatever they want. This movie actively undermines that goal for all of us.
Hear From Our Leaders
Through our latest campaign, we had fellow PARDUR leaders create brief videos on a topic that they felt most passionate about. We hope to inform you on these issues and to help to show you why Rescuers Down Under should stay a 20th-century film.
